Ha, een heikel thema. Wat is vestimentair correct op een sollicitatiegesprek? Geef ik de zoektermen 'job interview outfit' in op Google, wordt mijn scherm overspoeld met foto's waar ik spontaan van ga geeuwen. Of lachen, want de erge gevallen - als in te veel onbedekt vlees - scoren natuurlijk ook hoog in de zoekmotoren.

Nog geen idee waar naartoe vanavond? In CIAP Hasselt (Art Center in de oude gelatine fabriek) wordt de nieuwe collectie van Titi + The German Kid voorgesteld. En daar blijft het niet bij want ik heb er in Hasselt weer een collega-blog van formaat bij. 'How it fits' is de eerste Hasseltse Streetstyle blog, kijk er dus niet gek van op als je binnenkort in de Hasseltse straten wordt aangesproken om op de foto te gaan. Een extra motivatie om aanwezig te zijn: de vijf best geklede bezoekers ontvangen bonnen om op te souperen bij bovenstaande partners. I'm game!

Beauty is a lie

Schoonheid is een leugen, dat weet je vast al langer. Ieder van ons kan opstaan met puistjes of wallen en de deur uitgaan als miss perfect. Maar een schande is dat niet, al wordt dat schminkgrage dames wel eens in de schoenen geschoven. Ik kan me herinneren dat een meisje in het middelbaar ooit tegen me zei: 'Maquillage c'est camouflage et je n'aime pas', Vive La Fête citerend. Die woorden zijn een hele tijd in mijn hoofd blijven rondspoken. Ik dacht, als ik make-up moet dragen om me goed te voelen, dat ben ik vast erg lelijk. Het overgrote deel van de mannen deelt die mening, dat knappe vrouwen geen schmink nodig hebben. Ze denken dan ook dat Miranda Kerr van nature meters lange wimpers en getuite lippen heeft.

But that's no shame at all, though lot of girls get comments on wearing make-up. I remember that a girl at high school once said to me: 'Maquillage c'est camouflage et je n'aime pas', citing one of Vive La Fête's songs. Those words stuck with me for a while. I thought that since I was wearing make-up to feel better, I must have been very ugly. Quite a lot of men make that stupid accusation all the time, that pretty women don't need make-up. That's because they also believe that Miranda Kerr is gifted by nature with long eyelashes and thick lips.

De werkelijkheid is anders, al is ze ook zonder make-up een beauty (damn her). Ze ziet er gewoon anders uit, minder fonkelend, minder wauw-effect. En dat is bij elke vrouwelijke sterveling het geval, al sinds de oudheid. Het voordeel van make-up is dat je je assets in de kijker kunt zetten en rode plekjes en oneffenheden kunt verdoezelen. Iedereen kan dat trouwens, maar niet iedereen weet hoe dat precies moet. Dan zijn er natuurlijk ook de dames die het er letterlijk en figuurlijk té dik opleggen, denken we aan Oh Oh Cherso's Barbie. 

DIY - Paint splattered jeans

'Mensen zijn het creatiefst ten tijden van crisis', zeggen ze. En dat kan ik hardop beamen. Mijn koopervaring is altijd heel intens: het is niet het shoppen op zich dat me zoveel voldoening geeft, wel het gevoel jezelf weer opnieuw te kunnen uitvinden met dat nieuwe kledingstuk of accessoire. Het geeft je outfit weer een frisse look, doorbreekt de sleur. Heuse shopping-escapades zitten er nu jammer genoeg even niet in, waardoor ik op zoek moet gaan naar andere manieren om mijn garderobe een boost te geven. Deze jeans heb ongeveer een jaar, maar ik draag 'm zelden. Ik heb altijd het gevoel dat er iets aan mankeert. Het ideale proefkonijn dus voor een nieuw DIY-projectje. 

'People are the most creative in times of crises', they say. And I can definitely endorse that. My buying experience has always been very intense: it's not the shopping per se that I enjoy so much, more the feeling of renewal that a new piece of clothing or accessory gives. It gives your daily outfits a fresh touch, it breaks through the daily routine. Sad as it is, I'm not really able to go on big shopping sprees these days, so I'll have to find other ways to satisfy my need of renewal. I bought this jeans about a year ago, but I practically never wear them. I always feel like something is missing. The perfect subject for a new DIY-project, indeed.

Giveaway: Meubelen Jonckheere

Hopelijk erg binnenkort, mag ik mijn eigen appartement gaan inrichten. En wat kijk ik daar naar uit. Gelukkig is mijn boy een gewaardschuwd man en ligt onze smaak op dezelfde lijn. Ik doe niets liever dan interieur-webshops af te schuimen, op zoek naar leuke items. Zo kwam ik terecht op de gloednieuwe webshop van Meubelen Jonckheere, een winkel waar ik - als Limburger - niet meteen langs passeer. Maar dat probleem is nu dus van de baan, amen to the Internet. 

Very soon, hopefully, I'll be decorating my own appartment. And how I'm looking forward to that. Lucky that my boy doesn't mind my decorating-urge and that our interior taste is more or less the same. I can't stop myself but wandering interior-webshops, looking for cute items. That's how I bumped into the brandnew webshop of Meubelen Jonckheere, a shop where I - being from the other part of the country - wouldn't go so easily. But that problem's solved now, amen to the Internet.

Dagen zonder vlees // Days without meat

Vandaag is het startschot gegeven van 'Dagen zonder vlees', een campagne van de 24-jarige Alexia Leysen. In 2011 zag de campagne het licht en ondertussen zijn ook onze noorderburen al op de DVZ-kar gesprongen. De campagne moedigt iedereen aan om gedurende 40 dagen (de traditionele Katholieke vastenperiode) minder vlees en vis te eten. Het is geen oproep voor puur vegetarisme - Alexia eet ook graag eens een stukje vlees - maar gewoon om het gebruik te matigen. Waarom? De excessieve globale vlees- en visproductie heeft een enorme impact op het milieu. Gezien de toename van de wereldbevolking is dat op lange termijn onhoudbaar voor moeder natuur. 

Today 'Days without meat' kicked off, a campaign in Belgium and The Netherlands founded by Alexia Leysen (24). She started with it in 2011 and now it's becoming huge. The campaign encourages people to eat less meat and fish for 40 days (the traditional Catholic fast-period). It's no call for vegetarianism in general - Alexia too loves a piece of meat now and then - but just reduce the consumption of it. Why? The excessive global meat- and fishproduction has a huge impact on the environment. And since the world population is increasing every year, earth will not be able to cope with it for much longer.

In de vijf jaar dat ik in Leuven gestudeerd heb, kocht ik zelden vlees. Eigenlijk gewoon om mijn rekening in de supermarkt te matigen en ik miste het gewoon ook niet. In het weekend at ik thuis mijn portie vlees en dat was voldoende. Bovendien ben ik een grote kaas-fan, kaas is echt mijn guilty pleasure. Geitenkaas vooral, daar laat ik gerust mijn lapje vlees voor. Maar er zijn miljoenen heerlijke vegetarische recepten. Mijn favoriete website is www.greenkitchenstories.com, alleen al van de foto's ga je spontaan watertanden. Ik doe dus met plezier mee aan de campagne, net als Phillipe Geubels en Veronique De Cock (en nog een hele resem andere BV's en BN'ers) dat ook doen. 

In the five years that I've been studying in Leuven, I only seldom bought meat. Mainly because I wanted to keep my food-bill low and I really didn't feel like I needed it. In the weekends I ate my portion of meat at home and that satisfied me. Besides: I'm a huge cheese-fan, cheese really is my guilty pleasure. Especially goat's cheese, I gladly refuse a piece of meat for that. But there are millions of delicious vegetarian recipes. My favorite website is www.greenkitchenstories.com, you start drooling while just looking at the pictures. So I gladly participate in this campaign, just like a bunch of 'famous' folks in Belgium and the Netherlands do.

Meet: Swagg footwear Hasselt

Weer een nieuwe winkel die absoluut tot aanbeveling strekt: Swagg footwear, gloednieuw in Hasselt cité. Ik en sneakers, ik hoor je al denken. Maar ik ben dan ook verwikkeld in een soort stijl-switch dezer dagen. Ja ik draag nog graag hakken, maar sinds ik mijn wedge-sneakers kreeg (met een wedge van amper 4 cm) en mijn eerste paar brogues aankocht, is de stap naar de volledig platte sneaker nog maar klein. Vans en All Stars vind ik trouwens al altijd leuk, maar ik zag mezelf er gewoon nooit mee. Natuurlijk heeft dat alles te maken met mijn gestalte en daar trek ik me op 23-jarige leeftijd gewoon minder van aan dan voorheen.

But I have to say that I'm kind of in the middle of a style-switch. Yes I do still love to wear heals, but after I got my wedge-sneakers (with a wedge of only 4 cm) and I bought my first brogues, it's only a little step to go for the totally flat sneaker. I always liked Vans and All Stars actually, but I never really saw myself with them. That has everything to do with my height of course, but at the age of 23 that bothers me a lot less than before.

On sacred grounds

De site van de oude gelatinefabriek in Hasselt. Had ik het geld en het netwerk, maakte ik er een creatief woondorp van. Met een grote gemeenschappelijke tuin, inclusief zwemvijver en moestuin. En een tweedehandswinkel zou zich er gerust ook mogen huisvesten. Wat er precies met de grond gaat gebeuren, is echter niet duidelijk. Sommigen zeggen dat er inderdaad iets creatief mee gaat gebeuren, anderen zeggen dat het plaats moet maken voor de 'blauwe boulevard' - een project dat de Hasseltse kanaalkom aantrekkelijker moet maken. Allemaal goed en wel, maar ik ga hoogstpersoonlijk op de barricades staan als dit inspirerend stukje Hasselt verdwijnt. Een oproep aan de stad dus én aan potentiële investeerders: doe hier iets mee! 

Welcome to the old grounds of the gelatin fabric in Hasselt. If I had the money and the network, I'd make it a creative place to live. With a giant shared garden, swimming pond and vegetable garden included. And a second-hand store would be convenient too. But no one seems to be very sure about what will happen with this piece of land. Some say that indeed some creative plans are waiting approval, others say it will be dismantled for the so called 'blue boulevard'-project, making the area around the canal more attractive. I do think that this area of Hasselt needs to be upgraded, but I will definitely be standing on the barricades when they decide to get rid of the leftovers of the gelatin fabric. So to the city ánd possible investors: do something with it!

Terwijl iedereen loopt te hunkeren naar een authentieke Céline aan de arm - ik ook hoor - maak ik even ruimte voor een merk dat wat mij betreft gerust ook met de 'it bag'-status mag gaan lopen. Reed Krakoff. Knoop het maar in je oren, want deze tassen zijn om op te eten. Veel details en toch strak. Koop me gerust eentje, if you like.

Vandaag in mijn krant lees ik dat energiereus Shell de jacht heeft geopend op Belgisch schaliegas alias het 'wondergas'. Een deel van de Kempische en Luikse bodem zou het gas rijk zijn. In de VS wordt het gas al ontgonnen maar Europa stelt zich vragen bij de mileuvriendelijkheid van de nieuwe energiebron. Door sommige groene politici wordt het omschreven als een ecologische uitweg uit de energiecrisis, maar dat wordt door vele milieuorganisaties en experts net sterk in twijfel getrokken. Shell zal alvast niet beginnen boren uit liefde voor de de fauna en flora, denk ik dan. (volledig artikel hier) Het doet me net weer beseffen dat hoezeer we als mens bewust proberen te leven, het lot van de aarde boven onze hoofden wordt getekend. Toch vind ik het enorm belangrijk om als individu een verschil te willen maken, een houding die nochtans enorm moeilijk te verzoenen is met de huidige consumptiemaatschappij. Ik lig op dat vlak vaak met mezelf in de knoop. Maar ik blijf volharden in mijn strijd om mijn liefde voor schoenen en plat haar te blijven combineren met een ecologische mindset. Maar hoe doe je dat dan?

Today in my newspaper, I read about some speculations about energy-giant Shell hunting one of Belgian's new resources: shale gas a.k.a. the miracle gas. Part of the Belgian soil - as well as the soil in several other European countries - apparently contains it. The gas is already being cultivated in the US, but Europe is not sure about the possible damage of the technique to the environment. There are 'green' politicians who claim that it's the ecologic answer to the energy crisis. But then there are lots of environmental organisations and experts who claim that it's not a healthy solution for the earth at all. Shell won't be thinking about the flora and fauna, I guess. (full article on shale gas can be found here) And that makes me realize yet again that even if we individuals try to live more conscious, the faith of this earth is being signed above our heads. But that doesn't mean that I don't think that it's important that we want to do little things to turn the tide, though that is very hard to reconcile with today's consumer society. I do think about that a lot. But I keep on try to combine my love for shoes and styled hair  and an ecologic mindset. How is that to be done?

1. Verkoop je kleding. Niets zo ecologisch als je kleding een tweede leven te geven. Jij bent er vanaf, verdient er wat aan bij en maakt een ander gelukkig met je koopje. Geen zin om een online shop te maken? Organiseer dan een real life closet sale onder je vriendinnen, fun verzekerd. // Sell your clothes. Nothing more ecologic than giving your clothes a second life. You earn some money with it and your buyer is pleased with her bargain. Don't want to make an online shop? Organize a closet sale in real life among your friends, definitely fun. 

2. Sorteer. Eens begonnen is het super easy om vol te houden. In de keuken zet je een leuke rieten mand voor het papier, achter de kelderdeur of de deur van de voorraadkast hang je een zak voor plastiek (plastiek moet naar het containerpark, was de bakjes/zakjes goed uit om het proper te houden), groenafval hoort in de groene container. PMD staat voor plastieken flessen (dus niet alle plastiek), metaal en drankkartonnen. Dit is veel gestructureerder dan alles blindelings in de grijze zak of emmer te gooien en het bespaart je bovendien een hoop geld. // Sort your waist. Once you started with it, it's easy to keep up. Just put a basket in the kitchen for paper, put up a bag for plastic, put green garbage in the green garbage bin (if your country has one). It's structured and saves you money.

3. Doe het licht uit als je de kamer verlaat. Op plaatsen in het huis waar je maar zelden komt of die geen fel licht vereisen, kan je de klassieke gloeilamp vervangen door een spaarlamp. // Put out the light if you leave the room. And change to low energy lamps in spaces that you don't use a lot or don't need much light.

Fashion and coffee @ Hasselt

Je zou me haast gaan verdenken dat ik undercover voor de stad Hasselt werk, maar deze gratis reclame komt steeds geheel onafhankelijk tot stand. Het gekke is, ik woon niet eens in de stad. Maar al zes jaar lang spreek ik er af met mijn vriend om te chillen. En dat doen we ook zeer letterlijk. Ze kennen ons in de winkels als het eeuwig rondkuierende koppel en bij onze favoriete restaurantjes zien ze ons elke week. Levensgenieters, zo kan je ons inderdaad wel noemen. In de loop van 2013 word ik zelf ook (eindelijk) inwoner van de stad, dus de places to go zullen zich wellicht blijven ophopen. Hope you don't mind! 

You might start thinking that I'm working undercover for the city of Hasselt, yet this free advertising is totally coming from me and me alone. The crazy thing is, I don't even live in Hasselt. But for six years now it has been the meeting spot for me and my boy. And we definitely chill as if our lives depend on it. We are known in the stores as the couple that is always wandering around and we have diner at our favorite restaurants every single week. We do enjoy life together A LOT. I will (finally) become a true resident of the city in 2013, so I probably won't stop spilling the new places to be. Hope you folks don't mind! 

MUST GO ONE // MODEMUSEUM HASSELT

Huidige tentoonstelling / Current exhibition: Axelle Red - Fashion Victim 

Een tentoonstelling die me een onwaarschijnlijk goed gevoel gaf, al heeft dat wellicht veel te maken met mijn band met de liedjes van Axelle Red. Als kind ging ik mee op Frans kamp en daar zongen we Kennedy Boulevard en Sensualité luidkeels mee. Dat die chansons op de achtergrond te horen zijn, vind ik natuurlijk een meerwaarde. Er staan ook enorm veel kledingstukken uitgestald, met een handig boekje bij om te ontdekken welke ontwerper erachter zit. Meestal zijn dat Belgische ontwerpers, wat nog meer tot aanbeveling strekt. Wat minder vind ik de voorliefde van Axelle voor bont en ik mis ook soms een verhaal achter de outfits. Maar het is zijn 7 euro zeker waard! 

An exhibition that gave me an excellent feeling from the beginning, probably because of my love for Axelle Red's songs. I remember going on French camp as a little kid, singing Kennedy Boulevard and Sensualité out loud. The fact that they are playing these chansons in the background, really is an asset to the exhibition. Also: there are a lot of pieces of clothing to watch, including a booklet saying which outfit is designed by whom. What I didn't like so much is Axelle's love for fur, plus I sometimes missed the story behind the outfit. But it definitely it is worth its 7 euros entrance fee.
